E.2: from suspicions to reality

AN: it came to me as a real surprise to be nominated for the Golden Plumbob! I really didn’t expect it at all, being a newcomer, a non-English speaker and all… I’m really grateful to whoever nominated me, read, commented, liked the posts.This (very important) chapter is dedicated to you all.

Previously: Barcelona left after she and Croazia fought after the graduation ceremony and Virginia decided to forget her sorrows partying with her neighbour Kenji. Nicklaus started thinking that his wife may be not so faithful…

While Virginia spends time with Kenji,

little Dal is forced to find ways to entertain herself.

That is, if Croazia doesn’t think of it herself.

Even though, sometimes, she seems really interested in her sister’s easily impressed character, and thinks that she may have a “positive” influence over her.

In fact she’s practicing to be the best evil of the world, and she will need an assistant, and Dalmazia could be ideal. It’s a pity that her jokes doesn’t always have the desired effect, like when she’s chased off by the neighbor’s dog after she has left a burning package next to their door.

It takes many tries, but, finally, Virginia falls pregnant with Kenji’s child. It’s a relief, because it really took too much time, and because he’s old and she doesn’t like him very much, and because she wants another child after Barcelona left after her graduation, and because… well, there as so many reasons! But the most important of them all is that Nicklaus was starting to become suspicious about all those visits to Kenji’s. She’s very happy, now.

She doesn’t think that the lie she’s about to tell her husband – that this child is a miracle, given his age – isn’t going to work: they haven’t woohooed for a while…

The first trimester passes smoothly and eventful: Dalmazia become a child, thanks to the help of her sister Croazia, who hopes she will become as evil as she is.

Not only she can’t become evil, but she becomes brave and starts showing her goodness. Croazia suddenly loses interest in her.

And Dal doesn’t find anything better to do than painting. She’s always alone, poor girl.

Unfortunately, also bad things happen. Roux is unjustly considered neglected, and she’s taken away by the social worker Benjamen Novak.

All the family, but Virginia more than everyone else, is distraught by this. So, when she tries to tell Nicklaus that they will have another baby, the poor man only thinks that she means “puppy” by “baby”.

He’s feeling more and more distant from Virginia, so he thinks that he could try to save their relationship by giving her a nice gift. There are no puppies to adopt in Appaloosa Plain, but maybe a strong Palomino called Inferno could do the trick…

But when he arrives home with Inferno, Virginia appears happy but confused about the horse. Nicklaus explains that he thought she wanted another animal, after Roux was brought away. The woman can only answer that when she said “baby” she meant baby, and, after all, it can be clearly seen that she’s pregnant, now. He didn’t think she was only fatter, didn’t he?

Nicklaus’s rage explodes. He suspected that she was cheating on him, and now he has the confirmation. She’s pregnant with another man’s child! He’s furious, but, most of all, he feels a pain like he never had before. He did love Virginia, and she betrayed his love, his faith…

But Virginia isn’t taking anything of this nonsense. How is she supposed to carry on her project, to study genetic variability, if she can’t have children with other men? She’s furious, too: doesn’t he understand that she has to cheat, that there’s nothing wrong in that?

Nicklaus can’t believe what he’s hearing. He never saw before that Virginia is so cold-hearted. He wonders if Barcelona, Croazia and Dalmatia really are his daughters. He will never know – they all look like Virginia, and he doesn’t want to ask such a question to her.

In the end, he’s too tired to continue arguing. His wife does not understand, and explaining to her that what she did is wrong is too painful.

He only tries to spend as much time as possible away from her.

Virginia does not force Nicklaus to spend time with her, but she’s confused and hurt. The usual and pleasant fluttering that she’s still feeling when they’re together is now a painful knot in her stomach. She decides to visit Barcelona in her new home. She’s the warm-hearted one, after all, the one who always knows what to do and what to say, and Virginia misses her a lot.

Barcelona tries to explain to her mother that the pain she feels is a consequence of love. Virginia doesn’t understand, as always, and the girl can’t do anything, except for consoling her desperate mother.

She’s relieved when the cause of all that hurt is out of her body. Maybe things will be better, now, she thinks, but she’s sad that there’s no one with her to help and drive to the hospital, and she doesn’t feel the usual fierce joy at the birth of her son Eufrate.

Another AN: I said it would be hard for Virginia and Nicklaus… and it will be harder! *insert evil laugh* 

I’d like to point out that the dog wasn’t even in red, and was NOT neglected, and I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m not good at caring for animals, but this was the first time I got to keep one for some time… and I was teaching her tricks… grrr. 

I was also wandering if I could get a boy this time… I mean, after Amerigo, Virginia only got girls, and I wanted boys! Well, this time I was hoping for a girl to name Europa, and I got a boy. I didn’t even had any names prepared for boys! Hence, the name Eufrate, and I also forgot that this time I wanted to use English spelling… so, there he is, poor thing with an unpronounceable name for English speaker (at least, I think so).
